Criminals are trying to find any way possible to access other people's bank accounts and money. They do that by stealing garbage, stealing mail, stealing purses / wallets, burglarizing residences and businesses, burglarizing vehicles, using scams through the mail-phone-internet, and other methods.
There are several ways to protect yourself from fraud:
- Shred all unneeded documents with identity information on them with a cross-cut shredder. Shred anything with your name on it before throwing it away.
- Store all needed documents with identity information on them in a safe.
- Use a locking mailbox and collect your mail as soon as it is delivered. Have your new checks delivered to your bank and pick them up from there.
- Mail all letters with checks in them and other sensitive documents at the post office only. All outgoing mail should be mailed at the post office.
- Don't leave any identification or financial documents in your vehicles. DO NOT leave day planners, wallets, purses, checkbooks, credit cards, cell phones, or laptops in your vehicles. Your car must be empty at all times. Keep items out of sight, in the trunk.
- Don't leave identification or financial documents in plain view in your residence. Unfortunately, family, friends, and neighbors are not to be trusted with your info.
- Use firewalls and virus protection on your computer while using the internet.
- Don't give your credit card or bank account numbers over the telephone or internet unless you know who you are speaking with or dealing with.
- Report any fraud crime that you are a victim of. Report the crime to the police, your bank, and the three credit bureaus.
- Check your bank statements and credit reports on a regular basis. You are allowed one free credit report from each of the three credit bureau's yearly. Get yours at www.annualcreditreport.com.
